Hot tub details
The Wood Fired is the original AlumiTub: a cedar hot tub heated by a submerged wood burning firebox, with no power, plumbing or pumps needed. It is built on the riveted 5052 marine-grade aluminum structure pioneered in 2001, clad in Canadian Western Red Cedar held by stainless steel bands and fasteners, and arrives pre-assembled, ready to roll into place.
Heated by fire
Light the fire and a cold fill reaches soaking temperature in about 2 hours for the Small, 3 for the Standard and 5 for the Large. Stop adding wood around 95°F and the water carries on to 101 to 104°F. After that, an armful of wood a day holds it, and with the lid on it loses only 2 to 3°F overnight.
The firebox
At the heart of it is a welded aluminum firebox submerged in the water, so the heat goes straight in. It is the largest of its kind: it takes regular size logs rather than specialty cut wood, and burns hotter and cleaner, with less smoke and less wood. A cedar fence guards the stainless chimney, which has a spark-arresting cap, and an ash scoop and thermometer are supplied.
Made to go anywhere
Pre-assembled and 200 to 300 lbs empty, it rolls into place on its side with two people, through a gap as narrow as 38 inches, onto grass, gravel, pavers, concrete or a deck. No crane and no electrician: about an hour of setup and you can soak the same day. Islands, mountain cabins, rooftops and backyards with no side access are all within reach.
Winter-proof
Tested heating at −44°C (−47°F), with 360 degrees of insulation. Keep it hot with an armful of wood a day, or drain it when you leave: it can sit empty for months with nothing to dry out or crack.
Water your way
On a fresh fill routine, a fill lasts days to a couple of weeks with good care, which suits weekend cabins. Add the 120V filtration and cedar steps and a fill lasts 3 to 4 months. Fill from a hose, a well, a lake or the ocean.
Easy to love, hard to break
The aluminum holds the water, the cedar is banded on and replaceable, and every part can be reached by hand. Order it with compatibility ports and electric heat can be added later.
Handcrafted on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia since 2001 and backed by a 25 year structural warranty. Buy the right thing the first time, and keep it for life.

How it works
Fire in the water, heat that stays
The simplest way to heat a hot tub, done properly. The fire burns inside the water and warms it directly, and 360 degrees of insulation holds on to that heat. No pumps, no plumbing, no power. Just wood, water and a match.
The fire heats the water directly
The welded firebox sits inside the tub, below the waterline, so every surface of it gives its heat straight to the water instead of losing it to the air or a run of pipe. It is the largest firebox of its kind and takes regular size logs, so it heats a cold fill in about 2, 3 or 5 hours by size.
The insulation keeps it
360 degrees of insulation between the aluminum and the cedar, a floating layer on the water and rigid board beneath the base hold the heat in. With the lid on it loses only 2 to 3°F overnight, and an armful of wood a day keeps it hot.
Less wood, less smoke
A big firebox burns hot and clean once it is going, so it uses less wood and makes less smoke than a small stove that needs constant feeding. Nothing is wasted along the way.
Nothing to install
No plumbing, no electrical, no pumps and no installer. It arrives pre-assembled, rolls into place, fills from a hose, a lake, a well or the ocean, and is ready after about an hour of setup.
- Heats in 2, 3 or 5 hours
- 2 to 3°F lost overnight
- An armful of wood a day
- No power needed
- About 1 hour of setup
A cedar hot tub, without the compromises
Everything you love about a cedar hot tub, built on a watertight, non-porous aluminum vessel
A traditional cedar tub asks the wood to do everything: hold the water, seal itself, insulate and look beautiful. The AlumiTub lets the aluminum hold the water and the cedar do what it does best.
| A traditional cedar tub | The Wood Fired AlumiTub | |
|---|---|---|
| What holds the water | The wood, which has to swell to seal | Riveted 5052 marine-grade aluminum, watertight from the day it arrives |
| Leaving it empty | Has to stay full, or it dries, shrinks and leaks when refilled | Drain it and leave it for months, with nothing to dry out or crack |
| Keeping it clean | Porous wood, seams and joins that a rinse can't reach | A smooth, non-porous interior you can wipe clean by hand |
| Holding heat | The wood alone | 360 degrees of insulation behind the cedar, plus a floating layer on the water |
| Winter | Freezing and thawing work at the joints | Tested heating at −44°C (−47°F); drained, there is nothing to freeze |
| Salt water | Soaks into the wood | Marine-grade aluminum takes ocean fills |
| Getting it there | Heavy, and often assembled on site | Pre-assembled, 200 to 300 lbs, rolls into place with two people |
| The cedar | Structural, and hard to replace | Cladding held by stainless bands: replaceable, and no oiling or sealing needed |
Not all wood fired hot tubs are equal
Why the AlumiTub stands apart from other wood fired hot tubs
Round by design, made for gathering
Round to roll into place, and round so everyone faces each other while the view runs all the way around. The Large seats eight, and every size sits deep enough to sink in to the shoulders.
Not a rectangular lay-back bath, made for one or two, where someone ends up with their head beside the chimney and their feet in someone else’s lap.
A firebox that heats the water itself
Submerged and surrounded by water, so the heat goes straight in. The largest of its kind, it takes regular size logs and burns hot and clean, with less wood and less smoke.
Not a small stove that wants short, finely split logs and constant feeding, or one sitting outside the tub, heating the water at arm’s length.
Marine-grade metal where it matters
The water sits in riveted 5052 marine-grade aluminum: non-porous, watertight, ready for ocean fills, about a third the weight of steel and fully recyclable at the end of a very long life.
Not a plastic liner to puncture or an acrylic shell to crack and send to landfill. And lighter than stainless steel, which also isn’t suited to the sea water an AlumiTub happily takes.
Proven, and made in Canada
Pioneered in 2001, with more than 10,000 built for cabins, islands, backyards and lodges in over nine countries. Tested heating at −44°C (−47°F), named best overall wood fired hot tub by Field Mag, and backed by a 25 year structural warranty.
Not imported or mass-produced: every one is hand-built to order on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia, and we still supply parts for tubs built two decades ago.

Set up
From delivery to first soak
The Wood Fired arrives built, not as a kit. No plumbing, no electrical and no installer: about an hour of setup, and you can soak the same day.
- Find a flat place to landA deck, a dock, a clearing or the far corner of the garden. Anywhere level that carries the filled weight, with about 10 ft of open sky above the chimney.
- Roll it into placeAt 200 to 300 lb empty, two people roll it on its side through a 38 inch gap, down paths and over rough ground. Stand it up and band the cedar on with the stainless steel bands.
- Fill itFrom a garden hose, a well, a lake or the ocean. Lay the floating insulation on the water.
- Light the fire and soakAbout 2, 3 or 5 hours by size from a cold fill, then an armful of wood a day keeps it hot.
Once you order, we walk you through site prep for your property, step by step. Questions before then? hi@alumitubs.com
Ready to roll
Made to go the distance
It rides home in the back of a pickup. From there it rolls on its side down hills, across gravel and over rocks, lifting past anything in the way, all the way to where the view is best.
Riveted marine-grade aluminum is built to take the trip, so you can roll with it.
- Fits in a pickup
- Rolls on its side
- 200 to 300 lb empty
Made to go anywhere
On the map, or well off it
So long as there is a flat place to land, it goes. Islands reached by barge or sailboat, mountain cabins at the end of a logging road, beaches, docks, rooftops and backyards with no side access. Wherever the view is finest, and wherever people go to find their escape.
It needs no power and no plumbing, so it works as well at a fly-in lodge as it does on a city deck.
Made to match
Cedar, your way
Leave the Canadian Western Red Cedar to weather to a soft silver, or have it stained or toned to suit your property. At Orchard Estate in Byron Bay, the cedar was finished black to match the Black Cabins it sits beside.
The cedar needs no oiling or sealing either way. Just keep copper-based products away from the tub.

Wood fired hot tub FAQs
Still deciding? Email hi@alumitubs.com and we will help you choose the right size and setup for your property.
How long does the Wood Fired take to heat?
From a cold fill, about 2 hours for the Small, 3 for the Standard and 5 for the Large. Stop adding wood at about 95°F and the water keeps climbing to a 101 to 104°F soak. Once it is hot, an armful of wood a day holds it there. Dry, seasoned hardwood heats fastest. How long it takes to heat covers the method.
How do I light and heat it?
Fill to the line marked on the tub, or at least 4 inches above the chimney collar. Lay the floating insulation on the water and put the lid on. Light a small fire in the firebox with its lid open about 4 inches while it gets going, then close it. Add wood as it burns down and stir the water now and then as it heats.
Does it need electricity?
No. The firebox sits inside the water and heats it directly, so the Wood Fired needs nothing but wood and water, which is why it suits cabins, islands and off-grid properties. If you have a standard outlet and want water that lasts months, add the 120V filtration and steps. If you want electric heat as well, see the Hybrid.
Does it stay hot between soaks?
With the lid on, it loses only 2 to 3°F overnight, so a second evening is a short top-up rather than a fresh heat. Insulation does the work: 360 degrees of it around the tub, a floating layer on the water and the lid on top, with 3.5 inches of rigid insulation laid beneath the base during site prep.
Can I use it all winter?
Yes. Many owners soak most in winter. The Wood Fired has been tested heating in minus 44°C (minus 47°F), and the submerged firebox keeps working however cold the air gets. Keep the lid on between soaks and an armful of wood a day keeps it hot. Soaking in winter has more.
How do I keep it from freezing?
Either keep it hot or drain it. While you are using it, an armful of wood a day keeps the water well above freezing. If you are leaving and nobody will tend the fire, drain it fully before a hard freeze. Never let it freeze full. Drained, there is nothing inside to freeze, and it fills and heats again the day you are back.
Can I leave it empty over winter?
Yes. The water sits in the aluminum structure, not in timber that has to stay swollen, so it can be drained and left empty for weeks or months without harm. Owners with weekend cabins often fill on arrival and drain when they leave.
How long does the water last?
On a fresh fill routine, days to a couple of weeks with good care. With the 120V filtration fitted, a fill typically lasts three to four months. Keep bromine at 2 to 3 ppm, pH 7.4 to 7.8, alkalinity 80 to 120 ppm and calcium hardness 150 to 250 ppm. Use bromine, never chlorine, and no salt systems, copper or silver products. The Water Care Academy explains each step.
Can I fill it from the ocean, a lake or a well?
Yes. Marine-grade aluminum takes sea water; change ocean fills every five to seven days and rinse. Lake and well water work too, tested on the first fill and balanced to the ranges above. Do not fill through a water softener.
What sizes is the Wood Fired available in, and what does it cost?
Small: 5 ft (60 in) across, seats 2, 315 US gallons, $10,095 CAD (about $7,300 USD). Standard: 6 ft (72 in), seats 5, 420 US gallons, $10,595 CAD (about $7,600 USD). Large: 7 ft (84 in), seats 8, 650 US gallons, $11,995 CAD (about $8,600 USD). With 120V filtration and cedar steps: $11,595, $12,095 and $13,495 CAD (about $8,300, $8,700 and $9,700 USD). Every size is 38 inches deep as standard, with a 44 inch build available for taller bathers, $1,000 CAD. A $500 CAD deposit reserves your build slot.
How does ordering and delivery work?
A $500 CAD deposit reserves the next available build slot, and the balance is due 30 days before your tub ships. Each tub is built to order and pressure tested before it leaves the shop. We give you a ship date and deliver to your nearest depot, where it is loaded onto your truck or trailer; delivery to the curb is available for a fee on the Small and Standard. Current lead times are on the shipping page.
How is it set up?
It arrives pre-assembled and weighs 200 to 300 lbs empty, so two people roll it on its side through a gap as narrow as 38 inches. No crane, no plumbing, no assembly. It needs a flat, level base rated for the filled weight (3,200 lbs Small, 5,000 Standard, 7,000 Large) with 3.5 inches of rigid insulation beneath it, and about 10 ft of vertical clearance above the chimney cap. Setup takes about an hour, and you can soak the same day.
Is it allowed where I live, and what about fire bans?
In most places no building permit is needed for the tub itself. Because the fire burns in an enclosed, submerged firebox with a chimney, it is generally treated like a household wood stove rather than an open fire, but your local fire department is the authority, including on summer fire bans. If bans come every August where you live, the Hybrid keeps you soaking on the electric side.
How much wood does it use, and what should I burn?
Roughly an armful a day once it is hot, more on the first heat from cold. Burn dry, seasoned hardwood such as oak, maple, birch or ash. Avoid wet wood and pine, which smoke more and heat less. The best firewood goes deeper.
How is it different from a traditional cedar hot tub?
A traditional cedar tub relies on the wood swelling to stay watertight, so it has to stay full. The Wood Fired is built on a riveted 5052 marine-grade aluminum structure that holds the water on its own, clad in Canadian Western Red Cedar held by stainless steel bands and fasteners. It can be drained, moved and left empty without consequence, and the cedar never needs oiling or sealing.
Can I add electric heat later?
Yes. Order the Wood Fired with compatibility ports and the electric system can be added later, which turns it into a Hybrid. You can also change heating system at no charge up to 30 days before your tub ships.
What warranty does the Wood Fired carry?
The structure carries a 25 year structural warranty, and every part can be reached and replaced rather than thrown away. Full terms are on the warranty page.
Should I choose the Wood Fired, the Electric or the Hybrid?
The Wood Fired heats with nothing but wood and suits cabins, off-grid properties and anyone who loves the ritual of the fire. The Electric holds a set temperature with no fire to tend. The Hybrid has both, for weekend cabins or anywhere with summer fire bans. All three share the same aluminum structure, cedar and warranty. Compare all three.
