Does Your Hot Tub Need UV or Ozone?
Most hot tubs are sold with UV or ozone, or both, as an upgrade. They are usually described as a way to have cleaner water with fewer chemicals, and both do real work. But almost nobody explains what they are actually compensating for, which makes it hard to judge whether you need one.
Short version: they exist to reduce how much sanitiser a spa needs. Whether that is worth paying for depends on why your particular tub needs a lot of sanitiser in the first place.
What they do
UV passes water through a chamber with an ultraviolet lamp. UV-C light damages the DNA of bacteria and viruses as they go past, so they cannot reproduce. It works on what flows through the unit, at the moment it flows through, and it leaves nothing behind in the water.
Ozone generates O3 and injects it into the circulation line. It is a powerful oxidiser, so it breaks down organic material and kills microorganisms on contact. It also has a very short life in water, so like UV it works where it is injected rather than throughout the tub.
The important thing both share: neither leaves a residual. Neither one is protecting the water you are actually sitting in, only the water passing through the equipment. That is why every spa fitted with UV or ozone still runs chlorine or bromine as well. They reduce the load on the sanitiser. They do not replace it.
If a salesperson tells you a UV or ozone system means you can stop using sanitiser, that is wrong, and it is worth being careful about the rest of what they tell you.
What they are compensating for
This is the part that decides whether you need one.
A conventional spa has a lot of internal volume you cannot see or reach. Jets, air channels, long plumbing runs looping through the cabinet, a heater manifold, a sealed filter chamber. When the pump stops, water sits in all of it.
Water that sits, warm, in the dark, in a place nothing can scrub, is where biofilm forms. Biofilm is a bacterial layer that adheres to pipe walls and is very difficult to shift once established. It also consumes sanitiser continuously, which is why a spa with a lot of internal plumbing needs more chlorine or bromine than the size of the tub alone would suggest.
UV and ozone were adopted widely in the spa industry as a way to knock that load back down. In a tub with a lot of internal volume, they earn their place.
So the useful question is not whether UV is good. It is how much hidden plumbing your tub has. The more there is, the more a secondary system helps. The less there is, the less there is for it to do.
The thing that actually reduces sanitiser demand
Balanced water. It is unglamorous and it is free, and it does more than either device.
Sanitiser demand is driven by how much there is to sanitise, and by whether the sanitiser can work efficiently. Both are chemistry problems before they are equipment problems.
pH is the big one. Chlorine and bromine both lose effectiveness as pH climbs. A tub sitting at pH 8.2 needs considerably more sanitiser to achieve the same result as one at 7.4, and people usually respond by adding more rather than correcting the pH. Getting pH into range is the single cheapest thing you can do to use less sanitiser.
Alkalinity holds pH steady. Without it, pH drifts and you are always chasing it.
Filtration and organic load. A clean filter, a rinse before you get in, and a lid that keeps debris out all reduce what the sanitiser has to deal with.
Do those things and demand falls on its own, without another piece of equipment in the circuit, another lamp to replace, and another thing to fail.
If you already have UV or ozone
Nothing here says to rip it out. Two things are worth knowing.
Keep running a residual sanitiser. Neither system protects the water between passes through the unit.
If you run bromine, check the guidance for your region. Health Canada's guidance on pool and spa chemicals advises against using sodium bromide or other bromine products in combination with ionizer, ozone-generating or ultra-violet devices. The chemistry behind it is that ozone converts bromide in the water into bromate rather than active sanitiser, and UV breaks bromine down as water passes through, converting the active sanitiser back to an inactive form. Most spas fitted with these systems run chlorine, where the interaction is different.
UV lamps also lose output long before they stop lighting up, so they need replacing on schedule rather than when they fail. Check your manufacturer's interval.
And if you are choosing a tub
Ask what the water sits in when the pump is off. That tells you more about long term water quality, and about how much sanitiser you will get through, than any add-on on the options list.
A tub with jets, air channels and long plumbing runs will benefit from a secondary system. A simpler tub, where the water sits in one vessel and everything it touches can be reached and cleaned, has far less for one to do.
Why we do not fit either one
We could sell you a UV system. Most spa brands do. The truth is you do not need one.

There is very little hidden volume for water to stand in, which means far less of the biofilm load that UV and ozone were brought in to manage. There is a chemistry reason as well. An aluminium interior cannot run on chlorine, so we specify bromine, and bromine is the sanitiser both systems interact with badly. Fitting one would mean designing a conflict into the tub.
