Hot Tub Sanitizer, and Why It Stops Holding

Sanitizer does not evaporate. It gets used up. Every time it neutralizes sweat, body oil, a leaf or a bacterium, a little of it is consumed and does not come back. So when a reading drops to zero between one soak and the next, the question is not where it went. It is what it was working on.

Understanding that changes how you manage it, because the answer is usually to reduce the load rather than to keep adding more.

Why bromine rather than chlorine

Both work. Bromine is the more common choice for hot tubs, for reasons that come down to temperature.

Bromine stays stable in hot water where chlorine degrades faster. It also keeps working across a wider pH band, which matters in a tub where pH moves around more than it does in a pool. And its byproducts, bromamines, are less harsh on skin and eyes than the equivalent chloramines, and far less prone to that sharp smell people wrongly associate with a clean tub.

The trade is that bromine is slower to establish, and it is less stable in direct sunlight. Neither matters much on a covered tub.

Some tubs cannot use chlorine at all. Anything with a metal interior generally specifies bromine, so check what your manufacturer says before switching.

What consumes it

  • Bathers. Sweat, skin cells, body oils, lotion, sunscreen and hair product. The single largest draw in most tubs, and the reason a busy weekend flattens a reading that held all week
  • Organic debris. Leaves, pollen, insects and dust, which is what the cover is for
  • Heat. Higher temperature means faster consumption
  • Sunlight, on an uncovered tub
  • Old water, where accumulated dissolved solids create a standing demand nothing can satisfy

A thirty second rinse before getting in removes more of that load than any amount of sanitizer takes back out.

Why it stops holding

Four causes, in the order worth checking.

1. pH is too high

The most common and least obvious. Sanitizer effectiveness falls as pH rises, so at the top of the range and above, a reading that looks adequate is doing far less work than the number suggests. You can have correct-looking water that is not properly protected.

That produces a familiar loop: the water seems off, so more sanitizer goes in, but the real problem is pH, so the addition achieves little and the water now carries a heavier load. Correct pH and the sanitizer already present starts performing again.

2. Alkalinity is out of range

Alkalinity buffers pH. Without it in range, pH swings, and swinging pH means sanitizer that works inconsistently and appears to vanish. If you are correcting sanitizer every few days, check alkalinity before you add anything else.

3. Demand exceeds supply

Six people for three hours will exhaust a dispenser that comfortably handled two people twice a week. This is normal rather than a fault. Anticipate heavy use and check afterward rather than on a schedule.

4. The water is finished

Water carrying months of accumulated dissolved solids has a standing sanitizer demand that cannot be met. If a reading falls to zero within a day of every correction, and pH and alkalinity are both in range, the answer is a change rather than more product.

Getting the order right

Sanitizer is corrected last, every time, because the first three determine whether it works at all.

  1. Total alkalinity, typically 80 to 120 ppm
  2. pH, generally 7.4 to 7.6 depending on your tub
  3. Calcium hardness, typically 150 to 250 ppm
  4. Sanitizer

Adding sanitizer to unbalanced water is the most expensive mistake in hot tub care, because most of what you add is wasted.

Test before soaking rather than on a fixed schedule. Sanitizer can fall to zero between sessions with nothing visibly changing, and a reading from two days ago tells you nothing about today.

Green water

Green means algae, and algae means sanitizer has been at or near zero long enough for it to establish. Occasionally it means metals rather than algae, particularly copper from a well supply or from an algaecide, which tints water green or blue-green without the slippery feel.

Algae is slippery on surfaces. Metal staining is not, and it discolors the shell rather than the water. If it is metals, more sanitizer will not help and can make staining worse.

For algae: balance the water in sequence, restore sanitizer, clean the filter thoroughly, and brush any surfaces with visible growth. If it returns quickly, change the water rather than fighting it. For metals, see tannins, metals and brown water.

Buying bromine, and what to avoid

Good Clean Living does not sell bromine and will not. Holding regulatory approval across both the US and Canada is not workable for a product like this, so we would rather tell you exactly what to buy than sell you something compromised.

So, plainly:

  • Buy bromine tablets, usually listed as BCDMH on the label. That is the standard hot tub bromine tablet and it is widely available from pool and spa suppliers and online
  • Use a floating dispenser with an adjustable vent, so the release rate can be tuned to your tub and your usage rather than dumping everything at once
  • Do not use chlorine tablets. Trichlor tablets are strongly acidic and will pull pH down steadily, and they are not compatible with a metal interior at all
  • Never put two tablet types in one dispenser. Mixing bromine and chlorine tablets in the same feeder is genuinely dangerous, not merely ineffective
  • A six month supply is inexpensive, typically the cost of a couple of takeaway meals, so buy a reputable brand rather than the cheapest listing

Keep the dispenser moving freely rather than resting against a wall or a bench, and remove it before soaking.

Granular bromine is worth avoiding in most tubs. Powder that does not fully dissolve settles on the base and creates concentrated deposits on the surface underneath. If you do use a powdered product, dissolve it completely in a bucket of tub water first.

Reducing how much you need

The most effective sanitizer strategy is lowering demand rather than raising supply.

  • Rinse off before getting in, every time
  • Keep the cover on when the tub is not in use
  • Hold pH and alkalinity in range so sanitizer works at full strength
  • Keep the filter clean, since a saturated filter leaves organic material in circulation
  • Use a monthly enzyme treatment to reduce organic load between changes
  • Change the water before it develops a standing demand

On systems that support it, a UV-C sterilizer neutralizes bacteria and viruses without byproducts and reduces how much sanitizer the water needs in the first place.

If you have an AlumiTub

Bromine at 2 to 3 ppm and never above 3. That is lower than the 3 to 5 ppm typical of a conventional spa, and the ceiling exists to protect the aluminum as much as your skin.

The reason a lower figure works is structural. There are no jets, no internal plumbing loops and no filter chamber, so there is nowhere for bacteria to establish that a drain and rinse does not reach. Less hidden surface area means less standing demand.

What the interior does require is compatible treatment: bromine rather than chlorine, no salt chlorine generators, and nothing containing copper or silver. The rest of the published targets are alkalinity 80 to 120 ppm corrected first, pH 7.4 to 7.8, and calcium hardness 150 to 250 ppm.
