Why Hot Tub Water Goes Cloudy
Cloudy water is suspended particles too small for the filter to catch. Three things usually put them there: water that has drifted out of balance, a filter that has stopped doing its job, or sanitizer that is no longer keeping up with what bathers bring in. Almost always it is one of those three rather than something exotic.
The useful question is not what cloudy water is. It is which of the three you are looking at, because the fix is different for each, and treating the wrong one is how people end up dumping a tub that did not need dumping.

Cause one: the water is out of balance
This is the most common and the least obvious, because the water looks like a cleanliness problem when it is actually a chemistry one.
When calcium hardness or total alkalinity climbs too high, minerals come out of solution rather than staying dissolved. Those precipitated minerals are the cloud. Nothing is dirty. The water simply cannot hold what is in it any more, so it lets go of it.
High pH does the same thing by a different route. Above about 7.8 the water becomes more prone to scaling, and it also makes sanitizer far less effective, so you often get both problems arriving together: a cloud from the minerals, and a rising organic load because the sanitizer has stopped working properly.
How to tell: the cloud is even, milky, and shows up across the whole tub rather than as visible bits. It often appears within a day or two of topping up, or after a fill from a new water source.
What to do, in this order, because each step affects the ones after it:
- Total alkalinity first. It buffers pH, so correcting it first stops every later adjustment undoing itself. Typical target is 80 to 120 ppm.
- pH second. With alkalinity stable, bring pH into range. Most guidance sits between 7.4 and 7.6, and it is worth knowing your own tub's target, since it varies by interior material.
- Calcium hardness third. Too low and the water is aggressive toward surfaces. Too high and it deposits scale and clouds. Typical target is 150 to 250 ppm.
- Sanitizer last. It only works properly once the other three are right.
Follow that sequence every time and most cloudiness resolves without anything dramatic.
Cause two: the filter has stopped keeping up
A filter that looks acceptable can still be saturated. Once the media is loaded with oils and fine debris, water passes through without much being removed, and the particles stay in circulation.
How to tell: the cloud builds gradually over weeks rather than appearing overnight, and it gets noticeably worse after heavy use. If circulation seems weaker than it was, that is a strong signal.
What to do: rinse the filter, then deep clean it properly by soaking rather than hosing. A hose removes surface debris; only a soak removes the oils bound into the pleats. Never soak a filter in the tub itself. If the filter is old, replace it, because media does not last forever and a tired filter will keep clouding water no matter how often it is cleaned.

Cause three: sanitizer is not holding
Sanitizer is consumed by what it neutralizes. On a busy weekend it can be exhausted long before the next scheduled test, and once the reading falls to zero, organic material accumulates freely. That organic load is itself a cloud.
How to tell: the cloud follows use. Clear on Friday, cloudy on Sunday. A sanitizer reading at or near zero confirms it.
What to do: restore sanitizer to the working range for your tub, then find out why it ran out. Usually it is bather load, a high pH making the sanitizer inefficient, or a dispenser that has emptied without anyone noticing. Test before soaking rather than on a fixed schedule, since sanitizer can fall to zero between sessions with nothing visible changing.

What actually puts the particles there
Worth naming, because prevention beats correction every time and almost all of it arrives on people.
- Body oils, lotions and sunscreen. The single largest contributor in most tubs
- Detergent residue in swimwear. Rinse swimwear rather than washing it with a heavy detergent
- Hair and skin cells, which is why a rinse before getting in does more than any treatment
- Airborne debris, pollen, dust and leaf litter, which is what the cover is for
- Minerals from the fill water, particularly from a well or a hard municipal supply
A thirty second rinse before soaking removes more organic load than any product will take back out afterward.
When to stop correcting and change the water
Some water is finished. If the cloud persists after balancing and a clean filter have both had time to work, if total dissolved solids are high enough that treatments stop behaving predictably, or if the water has simply been in the tub a long time, a change costs less in time and product than another round of correction.

Preventing it
- Test two to three times a week, and before soaking if the tub is used periodically
- Correct in sequence: alkalinity, pH, calcium, sanitizer
- Deep clean the filter on a schedule rather than when the water looks wrong
- Rinse off before getting in
- Keep the cover on when the tub is not in use
- Filter the water going in, particularly from a well or a hard supply
