Wood fired AlumiTub at Camp Moose Trail, Golden British Columbia

Camp Moose Trail sits in the woods outside Golden, British Columbia, where there are more trees than people and more stars than cars. It is a glamping property built for everyone from seasoned backcountry campers to people who have never spent a night in the woods.

Between the skiing, sledding, hiking, biking and paddle boarding, there is a wood fired AlumiTub and a sauna cabin to warm up in.

The property

A common kitchen tent that stays cozy all day, a communal fire, and a wood fired pizza oven. Breakfast and coffee every morning. Glamping tents warm enough to sleep through a December night in the Rockies.

The tub and the sauna sit together, which is a deliberate pairing. Hot, cold, hot is a rhythm that suits a property where people arrive tired from a day outdoors. More on that in cold water therapy.

What guests say

We just finished winter camping at Camp Moose Trail on the December opening weekend. I cannot recommend this place enough for anyone that wants an amazing getaway. The hosts were absolutely wonderful and so outgoing and friendly. Amenities include a common kitchen tent that is cosy all day, along with a communal fire and wood fire pizza oven. The wood fired hot tub and sauna were so special and made the trip even more magical. Our glamping tent was super cosy and we stayed warm throughout the night.

Why wood fired suits a winter camp

Two reasons, and the first is obvious once you see the site.

There is no power run to individual camp features, and trenching one across a wooded property to a tub is neither cheap nor in keeping with the place. A wood fired tub sidesteps that entirely.

The second is that the fire is part of what guests came for. At a property already built around a communal fire and a wood fired pizza oven, a tub heated the same way belongs. An electric spa humming beside a glamping tent would be a different kind of place.

Winter is the harder test, and it is where insulation matters. 360 degrees of it, tested to minus forty-four degrees Celsius, is what makes a December opening weekend possible. More in can you use a wood fired hot tub in winter.

For hosts considering the same, a host's guide to wood fired hot tubs covers guest instructions and turnover.
