Water Chemistry for an Aluminum Hot Tub
Aluminum tubs want a different water regime than acrylic spas. Most published hot tub water advice assumes an acrylic spa, where the only metal is the heater element. In an aluminum tub the metal is the vessel, so the numbers are more specific.

Target ranges

Test 2 to 3 times per week with regular use, and before each soaking session.
Calcium hardness is the one people miss
Most hot tub guidance treats calcium hardness purely as a scale problem: keep it low enough and you won't get deposits. In an aluminum tub the risk runs in the other direction too. Soft water pulls minerals out of what it touches.
Soft water regions worth watching: much of the Pacific Northwest, coastal British Columbia, the Scottish Highlands, parts of New England, much of Scandinavia. If your supply is soft you'll need to raise hardness deliberately. In soft water regions almost every pool and spa in the area is already doing this.
If your fill line runs through a water softener, you're below spec. Softeners strip calcium as their entire function. Find an unsoftened tap, or bypass the softener for the fill.
Your water source changes the starting point
Every number above starts from whatever comes out of the hose, and that varies enormously. Test on the first fill from any new source rather than assuming.
Municipal water is usually closest to balanced, but hardness varies widely by region. Some supplies run as low as 10 ppm calcium.
Well water is workable and common. Use a hose filter on fill and test for iron and copper as well as the four parameters above. Copper is a dissimilar metal and worth identifying before it enters the tub. If your well water is very hard, dilute or blend sources rather than softening it.
Softened water should not be used at all, for the reason above.
Filling with rainwater
Rainwater is common on off grid and rural properties, and plenty of AlumiTubs run on it. It needs more attention than any other source, because it arrives with almost nothing in it.
Rainwater typically has near zero calcium hardness, near zero alkalinity, and a pH on the acidic side. Water in that state is under saturated, which means it will draw minerals from whatever it touches. It is the most aggressive water you can put in a tub, and it stays that way until you correct it.
The routine is the same as any fill, but it applies every time rather than occasionally, because rainwater carries no buffering over from the last fill:
- Alkalinity first, to 80 to 120 ppm
- pH second, to 7.4 to 7.8
- Calcium hardness third, to 150 to 250 ppm
- Sanitiser last
Two things worth knowing beyond the numbers. Filter on the way in, since roof collected water carries organic matter and a hose filter removes most of it. And if your collection surface sits under trees, expect to correct alkalinity more often, because organic acids from leaf litter are not removed by filtration alone.
Topping up from a different source, a well tap for example, changes the balance. Retest afterwards.

Why we don't use UV or ozone
We could sell you a UV system. Most spa brands do. The truth is you don't need one.
UV and ozone exist to do one thing: reduce how much sanitiser a spa needs. Water that's kept properly in range does the same job, without another piece of equipment in the circuit.
Most spas need the help because of how they're built. Jets, internal plumbing runs, sealed foam cavities and a filter chamber give water places to sit between soaks, and biofilm forms where you can't reach. Sanitiser demand climbs, so UV or ozone gets added to bring it back down.
In an AlumiTub, water sits in a smooth aluminum vessel with a simple filter circuit, and everything it touches can be reached and cleaned by hand. Keep the water in range and demand stays low on its own. A floating dispenser holds bromine at 2 to 3 ppm and releases only as much as the water actually consumes.
There's a chemistry reason as well. Bromine is what an aluminum interior calls for, and UV breaks bromine down as water passes through it, converting the active sanitiser back to an inactive form. Health Canada's guidance on pool and spa chemicals advises against pairing bromine products with ultra-violet or ozone devices.
Ozone has a further problem: it converts bromide in the water into bromate rather than active sanitiser.

Everything in the collection is compatible with an aluminum interior, which means no cross checking labels and no guessing about whether something belongs in your tub. On rainwater or any other soft source, The Balancers are doing the heaviest lifting.
Sanitiser
Use bromine tablets in a floating dispenser, held at 2 to 3 ppm. Set the dispenser and check weekly rather than dosing by hand. With proper balance, less bromine is needed over time.
Keep the floater moving freely rather than resting against the wall, the bench or the cedar, and remove it before soaking. A floater sitting in one spot creates its own localised concentration.
Granular bromine is no longer recommended. Powder that doesn't fully dissolve settles on the base and creates concentrated deposits on the aluminum surface. If you do use a powdered product of any kind, always dissolve it fully in a bucket of tub water first.
Order of operations on a new fill
- Fill and let cedar tannins clear, typically the first five fills. Balance alkalinity, pH and hardness during this period, but don't add sanitiser yet.
- Alkalinity first, to 80 to 120 ppm. It buffers everything after it.
- pH second, to 7.4 to 7.8.
- Calcium hardness third, to 150 to 250 ppm.
- Bromine last, once tannins have cleared.
Add one treatment at a time, circulate, and retest before adjusting again. Always dilute in a bucket first: fill a clean bucket with warm water from the tub, add the measured treatment and stir until fully dissolved, pour the diluted solution in, then circulate 15 to 20 minutes, or stir with a paddle in a Wood Fired tub. Never add powders or concentrates directly to the tub.
Products to avoid
- Chlorine in any form, liquid, granular, pucks, floaters
- Salt chlorine generators, which produce chlorine continuously and raise chloride levels as well
- Sodium bromide products and salt bromine generators, which establish a standing bromide reservoir in the water rather than releasing sanitiser as needed
- Copper based algaecides, which put a dissimilar metal straight into the water
- Silver based mineral cartridges and floating mineral systems, same problem
- Mixed or unknown multi product systems. If you can't identify every active ingredient, don't add it
If a pool store recommends something that isn't on the compatible list, it's almost certainly because they're working from acrylic spa assumptions. Ask us first.
Water changes
With consistent care, water can be maintained for 3 to 4 months between deep cleanings. Heavier use, and wood fired tubs, may need more frequent changes. Replace anodes with each deep clean.
Testing
Test strips are fine for pH, alkalinity and bromine day to day. For calcium hardness, especially on a new fill or a new water source, use a liquid test kit or check your municipal water report. Those reports are published annually and give the calcium figure for your area.
