Hot tub water care, explained
Clear, comfortable water comes down to four numbers and a simple routine. The Water Care Academy is AlumiTubs' plain guide to hot tub water care for any tub, wood fired or electric, cedar or acrylic: how to test and balance your water, how to keep it clean between changes, and what to do when it turns cloudy, foamy, green or starts to smell.
The four readings that matter
- Total alkalinity: 80 to 120 ppm. It steadies pH, so correct it first.
- pH: 7.4 to 7.8. Comfortable on skin and eyes, and the range where sanitizer works.
- Calcium hardness: 150 to 250 ppm. Soft water pulls minerals from whatever it touches; too much leaves scale.
- Bromine: 2 to 3 ppm. The sanitizer we recommend for hot water.
Balance first, treatment second
Start with clean fill water, test two or three times a week when the tub is in use, and adjust in order: alkalinity, then pH, then calcium, then sanitizer. Most of the problems people search for, cloudy water, foam, scale, a sharp smell, start with one reading out of range. Keep the water balanced and the filter clean, and sanitizer becomes a small, steady safeguard rather than the main treatment.
Not sure where your water is? The Water Care Assistant takes your test strip readings and tells you what to adjust, in what order. For a preventative routine built around this approach, see Good Clean Living Water Care.
