Why Hot Tub Water Smells

The sharp smell people call a chemical smell is almost never too much sanitizer. It is the opposite. That smell comes from spent sanitizer, the compounds left behind after it has neutralized something, and a strong smell usually means there is not enough active sanitizer left to deal with what is in the water.

Which makes it one of the most misread signals in hot tub care. The instinct is to back off. The correct response is usually to deal with the load and restore the sanitizer.

The sharp chemical smell

When sanitizer neutralizes sweat, body oil, urine or other organic material, it combines with it. The products of that reaction are called bromamines with bromine, or chloramines with chlorine. They are what you can smell.

Active sanitizer has very little odor. Spent sanitizer has a lot. So a tub that smells strongly is a tub where sanitizer has been busy and is now largely used up, sitting in water still carrying the residue of what it worked on.

The same compounds are what irritate eyes and skin. People blame the sanitizer, when what is irritating them is the byproduct of not having had enough of it.

What to do:

  1. Test rather than assume. A low or zero sanitizer reading alongside a strong smell confirms the diagnosis
  2. Check pH, because high pH makes sanitizer far less effective and is often the underlying reason it fell behind
  3. Restore sanitizer to the working range for your tub
  4. Clean the filter, since a saturated filter is holding organic material in circulation
  5. Reduce what is going in, which is the only lasting fix

If the smell persists after all of that, the water has accumulated more than treatment will clear and needs changing.

The musty or earthy smell

Different cause, different fix. A musty smell is biological growth, and nine times out of ten it is the filter.

A filter that has been damp and loaded with organic material for weeks is an ideal environment. Water passes through it constantly, so anything growing there is distributed through the tub with every cycle.

What to do: deep clean the filter properly by soaking rather than hosing, since a hose removes surface debris and leaves the oils that feed growth. Never soak a filter in the tub. If it is old, replace it, because media that has been colonized is difficult to fully recover. More in cleaning a hot tub filter properly.

If the smell survives a clean filter and balanced water, look at the cover. The underside of a cover sits in warm humid air permanently and grows mildew readily, and because it is out of sight it gets overlooked for months.

The rotten egg smell

Sulfur, and worth taking seriously because it usually indicates anaerobic bacteria, meaning growth in an oxygen-starved space.

In a conventional spa that is typically inside the plumbing, where water sits still between cycles. It can also come from the fill water itself, particularly from a well, where naturally occurring sulfur compounds arrive before anything has had a chance to grow.

What to do: if it appeared with a new fill, it is likely the source water, and a hose filter on the fill will usually deal with it. If it developed in water that was previously fine, treat it as biological: balance the water, restore sanitizer, clean the filter thoroughly, and if it persists, change the water rather than continuing to treat it.

The swampy or stagnant smell

This is water at the end of its life. Total dissolved solids have climbed, the organic load exceeds what sanitizer can control, and the water has a standing demand nothing will satisfy.

There is no treatment for this. Drain, clean the surfaces, clean or replace the filter, and refill. Continuing to add product to water in this state is money spent on a problem that a fresh fill solves in an hour.

Why smell is a better early warning than sight

Water can smell wrong before it looks wrong, which makes your nose genuinely useful between tests.

A tub that has developed a faint sharpness since yesterday is telling you sanitizer has been consumed, usually after heavier use than normal. Acting on that before it becomes a strong smell is far easier than recovering afterward.

What a clean tub smells like is almost nothing. Warm water, and maybe the cedar or whatever the tub is made of. If you can smell the water from a few feet away, something has changed.

Getting the order right

Whatever the smell, the sequence for correcting the water is the same, because sanitizer only works properly once the rest is in range.

  1. Total alkalinity, typically 80 to 120 ppm
  2. pH, generally 7.4 to 7.6 depending on your tub
  3. Calcium hardness, typically 150 to 250 ppm
  4. Sanitizer

Adding sanitizer to water with high pH is the most common wasted correction in hot tub care, and a strong smell is frequently the sign it has already happened more than once.

Preventing it

  • Rinse off before getting in. Sweat, body oil, lotion and sunscreen are what sanitizer spends itself on, and a thirty second rinse removes most of it
  • Keep the cover on, and air it occasionally so the underside is not permanently damp
  • Deep clean the filter on a schedule, not when the water starts to smell
  • Test before soaking, since sanitizer can fall to zero between sessions with nothing visible changing
  • Hold pH in range, so the sanitizer you have is working at full strength
  • Change the water on schedule rather than waiting for it to tell you

A monthly enzyme treatment reduces the organic load that produces these compounds in the first place, which is a more comfortable way to manage it than reacting.

Two structural differences change the odds here.

There is no internal plumbing, no jet housing and no filter chamber, so the anaerobic pockets that cause sulfur smells in a conventional spa do not exist.
