Cold Plunge Water Care
Cold water is not self-cleaning. It is a common assumption, and an understandable one, since cold slows bacterial growth considerably. But slowing is not stopping, and a cold plunge carries the same organic load as a hot tub, from the same source: the people getting into it.
What changes is the pace. Everything happens more slowly in cold water, which gives you more margin and a different routine, not an absence of one.

What cold actually changes
Three things work in your favor below about 60°F.
Bacterial growth slows sharply. Most of the organisms that concern us in warm water multiply far more slowly in cold, which is the entire principle behind refrigeration.
Sanitizer lasts longer. Consumption is driven partly by temperature, so a sanitizer level that would be gone in two days at 102°F can hold for a week or more in a cold plunge.
Evaporation drops, so the water concentrates more slowly and needs topping up less often.
Two things work against you, and they are the reasons a plunge still needs managing.
Bather load is proportionally higher. A plunge holds less water than most hot tubs and often gets used by the same number of people, so each soak represents a larger share of the total volume.
Cold water holds less in solution. Solubility falls with temperature, so treatments behave slightly differently and take longer to disperse.
The routine
The same four parameters, the same order, checked less often.
- Total alkalinity, typically 80 to 120 ppm
- pH, generally 7.4 to 7.6 depending on your vessel
- Calcium hardness, typically 150 to 250 ppm
- Sanitizer, at the working range for your setup
Test weekly rather than two or three times a week, and always before use if the plunge sits idle for a stretch. The readings move slowly in cold water, which is exactly why a weekly check catches drift before it becomes a problem.
Allow more time after adding anything. Cold water disperses treatments slowly, so give it longer to circulate before retesting than you would in a hot tub, and stir thoroughly if there is no pump.
Sanitizer in cold water
Keep it. The temptation to run a plunge without sanitizer is strong, particularly for people using it daily and changing the water often, but cold does not sterilize.
Bromine works in cold water, though it establishes more slowly than it does warm. Expect to wait longer for a reading to settle after dosing.
Two situations genuinely can run unsanitized. A plunge filled fresh and drained after a single session does not need treatment, in the same way a bath does not. And a plunge fed continuously from a natural source, where the water is being replaced rather than held, is a different proposition entirely. Anything held for days needs sanitizer.
Ice, and what it does to your readings
Adding ice is the most common way people reach genuinely cold temperatures, and it has consequences worth knowing.
Ice is close to pure water, so every bag added dilutes everything in the vessel: alkalinity, calcium hardness and sanitizer all fall proportionally. A plunge topped up with ice repeatedly drifts toward soft, unbuffered water without anything obvious happening.
That matters most for calcium hardness, since water low in calcium is under-saturated and will draw minerals out of whatever it touches. On a metal vessel that is the mechanism behind most surface marking.
So retest after significant icing, not just after topping up with water. And use ice made from drinking water rather than anything of unknown origin.
How often to change it
Less often than a hot tub, and the interval depends entirely on how you use it.
- Fill and drain per session: no treatment needed, no interval to track
- Held with sanitizer, light use: often six to eight weeks, sometimes longer
- Held with sanitizer, daily use by several people: closer to a month
- Held without filtration: shorter, because nothing is removing particulate between sessions
Change it when the readings stop responding predictably, when it develops any smell, or when clarity drops and does not recover. Those signals matter more than the calendar.
The habits that matter most
Because a plunge holds less water, what goes in matters more than it does in a larger vessel.
- Rinse before getting in. The single most effective habit, and more important here than in a hot tub
- Keep it covered. A cover keeps debris out and keeps the water cold, which does two jobs at once
- Keep it out of direct sun, which both warms the water and degrades sanitizer
- Skim after use, since anything organic left floating is what the sanitizer will spend itself on
- Do not go straight from a hot tub into the plunge without rinsing, which transfers sanitizer, oils and everything else between the two
Contrast bathing, and keeping two vessels
If you are alternating between hot and cold, you are effectively managing two bodies of water with different characteristics, and the traffic between them is worth thinking about.
Rinsing between vessels is genuinely worth the inconvenience. Without it, each transfer carries body oils, sanitizer and whatever else into the other, and the smaller vessel takes the worse end of that exchange.
Test both, on their own schedules. The hot tub will need attention more often. The plunge will drift more slowly but is easier to forget entirely, which is how a plunge ends up in worse condition than the hot tub beside it.

Worth being straightforward: an AlumiTub heats, it does not chill. There is no refrigeration in any of the three systems. A cold plunge means filling cold and letting the insulation hold it there, rather than dialling in a temperature.
That works better than it sounds. The same 360 degrees of insulation that holds heat through a Canadian winter also keeps a cold fill cold for far longer than an uninsulated vessel would. Keep the lid and the floating insulation on between sessions, and top up with fresh cold water when it drifts. In cool seasons that holds a usable plunge temperature for days. In high summer it drifts faster.

The water ranges are the same as for a warm fill: alkalinity 80 to 120 ppm corrected first, pH 7.4 to 7.8, calcium hardness 150 to 250 ppm, and bromine 2 to 3 ppm and never above 3. Calcium hardness deserves particular attention if you are icing regularly, for the dilution reason above, since soft water is aggressive toward the aluminum interior. Use bromine rather than chlorine, and avoid salt chlorine generators and anything containing copper or silver.
